How to Remove a Door Panel from a 2000 Honda Civic

Owners may need to remove the door panel to replace pieces of the panel, customize the panel with paint or fabric, or as part of a larger repair requiring access to the door of your 2000 Honda Civic. A novice mechanic can remove the door panel on a 2000 Honda Civic with a few common tools in about 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • Small pry bar
  • Remove the window crank on models equipped with manual windows. A small metal clip holds the rear of the crank to the window regulator. Slide a small, flat screwdriver behind the window crank and lift up the clip from the regulator. A small metal hook can also be used to lift up the clip. Pull the window crank from the regulator once the clip has been lifted.

  • Remove the screw holding the door handle to the door panel with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the edge of the door handle away from the door panel to access the actuating rod. Detach the actuating rod from the back of the handle with pliers. Detach the electrical connection, using a flat screwdriver to depress the tabs on the connector.

  • Place a flat screwdriver behind the speaker cover on the door panel. Pry the speaker cover from the door panel, working the screwdriver around the entire edge of the cover.

  • Remove the door panel retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Start in the pull handle, removing the screws holding the handle in place. Once the handle is removed, remove the screws now visible inside the armrest. Remove the retaining screws just under the power window switch on models equipped with power windows.

  • Position a small pry bar between the door and the door panel. Use the pry bar to separate the door and door panel, prying outward to dislodge the door panel retaining clips from the holes in the door. Work the pry bar around the entire edge of the door panel to ensure all of the clips are dislodged.

  • Pull the door panel away from the door. Detach the electrical connection from the rear of the door panel. Use a small, flat screwdriver to detach the connections by depressing the small tab on the side of the connectors if they can't be separated by hand. Remove the door panel from the vehicle after detaching the electrical connections.
