How to Remove a Volkswagen Wiper Arm

A Volkswagen's wiper arms are easy to remove and replace. The arms are part of the overall system, and they have two primary functions. Wiper arms keep a Volkswagen's wiper blades against the windshield. An internal spring assists with that. In addition, the arms connect the blades to the wipers transmission and motor, so they also help move the blades across the windshield. Besides replacement, the arms periodically need removing if the wiper system's motor or transmission needs servicing.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Socket wrench
  • Start on the driver's side of the Volkswagen. Lift up the covering at the base of the wiper arm. If it will not come off by hand, you can lever the covering off with a flat-head screwdriver.

  • Use a socket wrench and remove the nut beneath the covering.

  • Lift the Volkswagen's wiper arm away from the windshield with one hand. It will bend at the hinge near the base. Grip the base of the wiper arm with your other hand. Pull directly upward.

  • Repeat these removal steps on the passenger-side blade.
