How to Fix Service Engine Soon Problems

The infamous "Service Engine Soon" error code is a message signifying the vehicle's ECM or electronic computer management chip has found an error in the vehicle's operation. This error message can be caused by aftermarket modifications to your vehicle or malfunctioning parts in your engine, transmission, suspension or electronics. Determine the cause of the error and fix the "Service Engine Soon" code.

Things You'll Need

  • OBD II Code Reader (if needed)
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from your vehicle battery and wait 10 minutes. Disconnecting the battery resets the vehicle's ECM which resets the "Service Engine Soon" message. Reconnect the negative battery cable and start your vehicle. Sometimes aftermarket auto parts such as cold air intake kits or other exhausts may trigger an error message in the ECM of the vehicle since the aftermarket parts are not stock vehicle specifications. If the message persists, proceed to Step 2.

  • Obtain an OBD II Reader. Autozone employees across the USA also are willing to assist you in determining your vehicles "Service Engine Soon" error with the use of their store OBD II Readers. Insert the OBD II Reader plug adapter into your vehicle's ECM adapter and the OBD II Reader will read and display the "Service Engine Soon" trouble codes. You can reference the code online using a search engine and determining what to do to remedy the error message. If problem persists, proceed to Step 3.

  • Take your vehicle to an auto maintenance professional and have them evaluate your "Service Engine Soon" error and determine the best course of action to remedy the problem. Extensive repairs may be needed or only minimal depending on your specific vehicle and circumstances.
