How to Install a 2008 Silverado Tail Light

The taillight on the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado may either refer to the taillight case, or to an individual bulb stored inside the taillight case. No matter whether you want to replace an individual bulb, or the entire case, you can do so with a simple tool and about 10 minutes of your time. The turn signal bulbs illuminate when you have your blinker switch turned on. The back-up bulbs illuminate while you are backing up, and the brake lights illuminate when you apply the brake pedal.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb 3047 (all bulbs)
  • Pull the Silverado's tailgate handle, and lower the tailgate. This gives you access to the taillight mounting screws.

  • Remove the two screws from the taillight case of your choice. Pull the taillight case toward you to remove it from its mount.

  • Inspect the back of the tail light case. You'll see three bulbs along with a wiring harness for each. Turn the bulb you want to replace counterclockwise then pull it straight out of the case. The top bulb is the truck's turn signal. The middle bulb is the back-up bulb. The bottom bulb is the brake light.

  • Unplug the bulb you are replacing from its wiring harness. Dispose of it. Connect the new bulb to the wiring harness. Insert the bulb into the hole, and turn it clockwise. Push the taillight case into its mount, and tighten the two screws to finish.

  • Turn each of the bulbs counterclockwise to release them if you want to replace the entire taillight case. Grab the new case, and insert each of the bulbs into the appropriate hole. Turn them all to the right to lock them in place. Reinsert the case, and tighten the screws.
