How to Reset the Oil Change Light on a GM 6.0L

The GM 6.0L Vortec V8 engine is equipped in GM trucks, including the Chevy Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500, as well as the GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500 and Denali. It also appears in the Chevrolet Avalanche. Because General Motors' Chevrolet and GMC trucks are very similar, the vehicles use the same driver control center. This is the center that displays the truck's "Change Engine Oil" or "Change Oil Soon" light. You can expect this warning to appear at approximately 3,000 miles. After you have the truck's oil changed, reset the light and the warning goes away.

  • Crank your GM truck's engine. Find the driver control center on the dash. You should see several buttons. Push the vehicle information button repeatedly. This button shows a "Car" icon.

  • Stop when you arrive at the "Change Oil Soon" or "Oil Life Remaining" message. This will appear under the odometer's mileage reading.

  • Press the "Check" button for five seconds. The "Oil Life Percentage" beneath the message will change to "100%." This tells you the oil change light is reset.
