How to Install a Bumper Guard

Bumper guards, both permanent and removable, are automotive accessories designed to protect car bumpers that you can install. The guards can prevent car dings, chips or scratches, saving money in bumper damage repairs. You can buy them online or from an automotive parts store and they are available in assorted colors and sizes to fit your car.

Things You'll Need

  • Masking tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Straight-blade cutters
  • Bumper guard

Permanent Bumper Guard

  • Wash and fully dry the bumper area. Attach one end of a tape measure to the wheel edge with masking tape. Stretch the tape measure across the front bumper. Place masking tape along the line to serve as a guide when attaching the bumper guards. Use a level to ensure the line is straight.

  • Remove about 1 foot of the adhesive backing from the bumper guard. Attach the guard to the bumper at one end and continue placing it around the bumper, following the tape guide. Do not press down and secure the bumper guard to allow for its adjustment. Make sure to clear the license plate when attaching the bumper guard.

  • Mark the bumper guard with a pencil at the end of the bumper. Follow the angle of the wheel edge for a professional look. Cut the excess bumper guard with straight blade cutters.

  • Secure the bumper guard by pressing down gently along its length with your hands. Remove the tape guideline.

  • Follow the above steps on the rear bumper for a rear bumper guard installation. Make sure to clear the license plate when attaching the bumper guard.

Removable Bumper Guard

  • Open the vehicle's trunk. Attach the bumper guard's two straps to the trunk floor carpeting. You can also secure the straps on the lid of the spare tire compartment, if applicable.

  • Adjust the guard's straps so it is positioned at the center of the bumper. Ensure the guard does not block the rear exhaust pipes.

  • Remove the guard before driving the vehicle, leaving its straps attached to the floor or spare tire compartment, if applicable. Do not drive with the guard attached.
