Installation Instructions for a Sissy Bar on a Harley

Installing a sissy bar on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle may seem like a daunting task to someone who has never undertaken the task. Fortunately, most sissy bar kits come with just about everything you need to make the installation, with the exception of a few hand tools. Not all sissy bar kits are alike, and you first must be sure that you have a kit that will fit onto your model Harley-Davidson.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Sissy bar kit
  • Remove the fender strut from the fender with a socket wrench. Starting with the left side, remove the socket head screws from each side of the fender.

  • Place the sissy bar mounting brackets onto the fender, aligning the holes in the bracket with the holes that the socket head screws were removed from. Insert the sissy bar mounting bolts into the holes. Place a washer onto the end of the bolt and tighten the nut with a socket wrench.

  • Repeat the process, attaching the mounting bracket to the right side of the fender.

  • Attach the sissy bar to the receiver that came with the sissy bar kit. Insert the screws through the holes in the receiver and the sissy bar.

  • Place the sissy bar over the fender. Align the receiver with the mounting bracket and insert bolts into the holes. Place a nut onto the back of the bolt and tighten it with a socket wrench.
