All About Clutches

Today’s high-performance clutch designs are so sophisticated that selecting the right setup can be downright confusing. New strides in friction materials and pressure-plate developments like centrifugally assisted diaphragms have upset the old mantras of spring pressure, release characteristics, and flywheel weight. These parts can no longer be selected in isolation; instead, they must be selected as part of a total drivetrain team, carefully coordinated with the engine, trans, rearend, and vehicle. Just like your engine, the flywheel, disc, and pressure plate must also be designed as a team to yield desired launch and driveability characteristics. Proper selection begins by understanding basic clutch design characteristics and differences, as shown in the sidebars below—then consult your favorite clutch maker’s tech specialist to fine-tune your selection.
