How to Remove a Pick-Up Coil

A pick-up coil is part of a vehicle's ignition system. Its main function is to pick up the pulses of the distributor and transmit it to the ignition module, telling it when to fire the spark plugs. Removing the pick-up coil may be necessary from time to time. The steps are basic and, if done correctly, will save you a trip to the auto mechanic. With the necessary tools and techniques, you can remove the pick-up coil for your vehicle using little effort.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Unplug the ignition coil wire. It is the wire leading from the coil to the center of the distributor. Remove both of the wire connectors that are connected to the ignition coil.

  • Remove the two mounting screws from the ignition coil, then remove the ignition coil. Loosen the screws on the distributor cap using a screwdriver and then remove the distributor.

  • Remove the plug connectors from the ignition module, which is located at the base of the distributor, and then unplug the pick-up coil connector from the back of the ignition module.

  • Remove the bracket that is located at the base of the distributor. Lift the pick-up coil and plate assembly from the housing. Press on the retainer located on the underside of the lower plate. You can now carefully remove the pick-up coil.
