How to Bypass the Fuel Relay in a 1989 Chevy Suburban

The fuel pump relay on a 1989 Chevy Suburban sends current to the fuel pump when you turn on the ignition. If the relay doesn't operate, the fuel pump won't come on and the engine won't start. If you suspect a bad fuel pump relay, you can bypass it to see if the Suburban will start. However, this does not prove the relay is bad, as the control circuits to the relay may be what is preventing if from operating.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Short piece of #14 to #20 wire, stripped at both ends
  • Turn off the ignition. Remove the screws holding the fuel pump relay in place with the screwdriver.

  • Pull the fuel pump relay out of the socket.

  • Place the short piece of wire between pins "A" and "E" of the relay socket. This will make a connection that bypasses the fuel pump relay.
