How to Know When an Electric Fuel Pump Is Going Bad on a Car

An electric fuel pump provides the right amount of fuel to your vehicle's motor to keep it running smoothly. When there is a problem with the fuel pump, it can affect the performance of the vehicle and it needs to be replaced. There are different methods to diagnose a bad electric fuel pump and each one can be done in a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Voltmeter
  • Turn the ignition key to start the vehicle. If the engine does not turn over and start, then there is likely a problem with the electric fuel pump not providing the necessary amount of fuel for the engine to start.

  • Pay attention to how the vehicle is running when you are driving it. Even if the vehicle does start and run, there could still be a problem with the electric fuel pump if the vehicle jerks and stalls or if it loses power when you accelerate from a complete stop.

  • Turn the key in the ignition to the on position but do not attempt to start the vehicle. Listen for a whirring or humming noise to indicate that the electric fuel pump is starting. If no noise is heard, then there is a problem with the electric fuel pump.

  • Connect a voltmeter to the electric fuel pump. How you do this depends on the make and model of the vehicle and the voltmeter you use. Make sure to read the instructions carefully before connecting the voltmeter. Turn the ignition to the on position but do not start the vehicle. Check to see if there is any power being supplied to the voltmeter. If not, then the fuel pump is not working properly. If there is power being supplied to the voltmeter but the electric fuel pump does turn on as indicated with a whirring or humming noise, then the problem is still with the electric fuel pump.
