How to Remove an Explorer's EGR Tube

The Explorer is a mid-sized SUV designed and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The Explorer is equipped with an EGR valve. This valve has a vacuum hose that takes the exhaust fumes and carries them into the intake manifold. The vacuum hose runs from the EGR to the intake manifold. Removing the hose can be a bit tricky as some nuts and bolts are somewhat hidden. It's important to learn how to remove the hose in case it becomes damaged or if you need to remove the upper intake manifold or other components.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Park the Explorer and wait for the SUV to cool down for a half hour before attempting any maintenance on the vehicle.

  • Open the hood and locate the EGR system. The EGR is found on the driver's side of the engine toward the back next to the intake manifold and motor oil reservoir. The valve is a mushroom-shaped component that has a vacuum hose running from the top of the EGR to the intake manifold.

  • Pull the vacuum hose off of the EGR valve. The hose will come off with very little force.

  • Loosen and remove the two bolts that secure the EGR valve to the mount with a socket wrench. Look on the backside of the mount for a small nut holding the mount down. Remove this nut and set it aside.

  • Remove the motor oil dipstick. You will see another small, 1/2-inch nut. Remove the nut. This will free the vacuum hose from the intake manifold. Gently pull the vacuum hose off of the intake manifold to remove it.
