How to Replace Jetta Brake Lights

Brake lights are essential for the safe operation of any vehicle. They let other drivers know we are slowing down or preparing to stop. If a brake light fails, replace it as soon as possible. Replacing the brake light on a Volkswagen Jetta is a maintenance task you can perform in a short time, without tools. Completing this job yourself will save you money and possibly a ticket.

  • Open the trunk and look in the area where the rear lights are housed. Open the door of the lighting compartment by twisting the plastic latches. This will give you access to all the rear light bulbs.

  • Remove the housing that holds the bulbs by squeezing the retaining tabs. Pull the bulb housing out of the lens.

  • Remove the old bulb by turning counterclockwise. The burnt-out one may be a little discolored. Insert the new bulb, pushing down and turning clockwise a quarter turn.

  • Start the car and test the bulb by stepping on the brake pedal.

  • Return the bulb holder to its housing in the lens and click the retaining tabs back into place. Close the door of the trim piece and secure the plastic latches.
