How to Disable the Check Engine Light on a Toyota

The Check Engine light on a Toyota illuminates to let you know there is a problem with the vehicle. Have the vehicle looked at and fixed by a qualified mechanic before disabling it. The mechanic can read the code to determine what is wrong with the vehicle. If the check engine light is still on, the code needs to be cleared in order to turn off and disable the light. It is a quick and easy fix.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Ignition key
  • Check that the ignition is completely off to avoid any damage to your Electronic Control Module.

  • Pop up the hood of the vehicle, and locate the battery. Find the positive battery cable clamp, and loosen the retaining nut on the clamp with a wrench. Slide the clamp off of the terminal, and take care not to let it touch the negative side of the battery. Wait about five minutes.

  • Reconnect the clamp to the positive terminal, and tighten the nut with a wrench. Close the hood of the vehicle.

  • Start the engine. Watch the instrument panel to see if the Check Engine light has turned off.
