How to Insert an Exhaust Silencer

The exhaust on a vehicle is a means for the engine system to release and expel the resultant gasses from the combustion within in a safe and unobtrusive way. While this is an integral task in the process of running a vehicle, the noise created by some exhaust systems is loud to the point of unbearable. There is a simple device called an exhaust silencer that you can use to minimize and muffle the unpleasant sounds.

Things You'll Need

  • Cleaning cloth
  • Exhaust silencer
  • Marker
  • Power drill
  • Drill bit
  • Screwdriver
  • Wipe out the inside of the exhaust pipe with a cleaning cloth dipped in water. This will remove carbon deposits and dirt that have built up in your exhaust.

  • Push the silencer as far as it will go into the exhaust pipe with the metal tab aligned along the top of the exhaust opening.

  • Make a mark with marker through the small hole in the tab of the silencer. Pull the silencer out of the exhaust.

  • Drill through the mark on the inside of the exhaust with a power drill, through the interior layer of the exhaust. Do not drill through the exterior layer.

  • Push the silencer back into the exhaust pipe and insert the included screw into the tab and the hole in the pipe. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screw until it holds firmly against the silencer.
