How to Replace a Fuel Filter in a 2007 Ford F150

The fuel filter on the 2007 Ford F150 is a canister-type filter that strains any type of impurities from the gas. The canister filter is designed with a inner filter made up of elongated fibers that catch and hold impurities in the gas as it travels to the injectors. Replace the fuel filter between 60,000 and 75,000 miles to keep your engine performing well.

Things You'll Need

  • Drip pan
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Fuel line quick-disconnect tool -- part number-K-D 3321
  • New fuel filter
  • Park the 2007 Ford F-150 in a safe work area with plenty of ventilation. preferably outside. Set the parking brake and turn the engine off. Make sure that the key is in the "Off" position.

  • Unscrew the gas cap from the fill neck of the gas tank completely. This process will depressurize the fuel system and will prevent gas from spraying when the fuel lines are removed from the fuel filter ports.

  • Slide under the driver side of the F-150 behind the cab and locate the fuel filter, mounted to the driver-side frame rail. The fuel filter looks like a silver cylinder with a fuel line coming out of each end. The fuel lines are secured to the fuel filter by safety clips.

  • Slide the drip pan directly under the area of the fuel filter. Then, slide the end of the screwdriver underneath the safety clips and pry upward until the clips come off the fuel lines. Place the safety clips to the side.

  • Insert the 5/16-inch end of the quick-disconnect tool into the end of one of the fuel lines. Press the tool inward into the fuel line until you feel the fuel line unlock from the fuel filter port. Then, pull out on the fuel line. Repeat this process for both fuel lines.

  • Pull down on the flexible clamp with one hand and remove the fuel filter from the clamp with the other hand. Place the old fuel filter into the drip pan. Then, press down on the clamp and position the new fuel filter into the clamp with the flow arrow on the side of the new filter pointing toward the front of the truck.

  • Push both fuel lines straight onto the fuel filter ports until they lock to the ports. Carefully pull out on the fuel lines to make sure that they are properly secured to the fuel filter ports. Then, press the safety clips back over the fuel lines and the fuel filter ports with your hands.

  • Slide the drip pan out from under the truck and screw the gas cap back on the fill neck of the gas tank until it clicks.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "Accessory" position for five seconds and then turn the key back to the "Off" position. Repeat this three times to completely prime the new filter with fuel.

  • Crank the motor and check the fuel lines and the fuel filter for any gas leaks. Then, turn the motor off.
