How do I Replace a Nissan Truck & License Plate Lamp Lens?

License plate lights, also called tag lights, illuminate your rear license plate, making it visible at night. Nissan trucks have two license plate lights located to the sides of the plate which you can replace yourself within a few minutes. License plate light bulbs are relatively inexpensive and replacement requires no special mechanical knowledge.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb
  • Switch on the Nissan truck lights and locate the bulb that needs replacement. Note that there are two license plate lights: one to the right and one to the left of the license plate.

  • Pry out the license plate light cover of the burned out light bulb using a flat head screwdriver. The cover attaches to the bulb socket, which connects to wires behind the bumper.

  • Remove the bulb cover by twisting it counterclockwise and pulling it off the bulb. Set it to the side. Note that some models have a plastic washer that sits between the bulb cover and bumper. Do not lose the washer.

  • Remove the old bulb by pulling it directly out of the socket. Discard the old bulb.

  • Insert the new bulb into the socket and push it in gently until it is secure.

  • Replace the cover on the bulb socket. Turn it clockwise to secure it. Note that you need to place the washer on first if your model of Nissan truck has a plastic washer.

  • Line up the grooves on the license plate light and fit the assembly back into the hole in the bumper. Press the assembly in until you hear it click secure.

  • Turn on the lights to verify that you installed the bulb correctly. If the license plate light is still not working you may need to clean the bulb socket, check the wiring for damages or replace the associated fuse.
