How to Unclog a Fuel Injector

The fuel injectors of your car or truck can become clogged with use, causing you car to misfire, run poorly and get decreased gas mileage. There are essentially two ways you can unclog the fuel injectors in your vehicle. One way is by using a liquid fuel injector cleaner, which comes in the form of a gasoline additive. The other is by using a fuel injector cleaning kit.

Gas Additives

  • Run almost all of the gasoline out of your vehicle.

  • Pour the contents of one container of fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank.

  • Fill your vehicle up with a complete tankful of gas, preferably extra or super unleaded.

  • Start your engine and run your vehicle to allow the fuel injector cleaner to work itself through your injectors.

Fuel Injector Cleaning Kit

  • Remove your air cleaner so that you can access the fuel rail on top of your injectors. The location of your air cleaner may depend on the year, make and model of your vehicle, so consult your owner's manual or with a parts house to find the exact location.

  • Locate the Schrader valve (if your vehicle has one) or inlet fuel line and attach the cleaning kit adapter to it. Next, attach the can of cleaner to the attached adapter.

  • Locate the fuse panel which contains your fuel filter fuse and remove it. The fuse panel should be located on the driver's side fender well. However, consult your owner's manual or parts house to determine the exact location, if need be.

  • Open the valve on the cleaner and adapter and allow the contents to empty completely into your fuel line. Once emptied, turn off the engine, replace the fuel filter fuse and detach the adapter and can of cleaner from the inlet fuel line.

  • Replace the air cleaner.
