How to Loosen a Serpentine Belt on a Ford 4.6L

The serpentine belt is on the front of the engine and connects to every pulley. If the serpentine belt is too tight, the belt might break and none of the engine components connected to the engine pulleys will work. The tension in serpentine belt is controlled by the tension pulley. The tension pulley is on the passenger side of the engine towards the center of the engine. Loosening the serpentine belt is a fairly easy task that you'll need only a couple of tools to accomplish.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Allen wrench
  • Lift the hood of the Ford and prop it open. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for about one hour. Using you thumb, loosen the adjustable wrench using the turn wheel and connect the wrench to the metal arm on the tension pulley. Tighten the wrench using the turn wheel.

  • Pull the adjustable wrench towards the driver side of the engine. Pull the belt off of the tension pulley's roller.

  • Insert the Allen wrench into the hole in the center of the tension pulley. Slowly turn the Allen wrench counterclockwise until you feel that you have loosened the spring inside the tension pulley sufficiently.

  • Remove the Allen wrench from the tension pulley. Pull the adjustable wrench toward the driver side of the engine. Replace the belt on the tension pulley's roller. Remove the adjustable wrench from the tension pulley the opposite way that you connected it.

  • Repeat as needed to adjust the tension in the serpentine belt to the proper level.
