How to Properly Hook Up Auto Battery Cables

Properly hooking up your auto battery cables is an important part in the running status of your vehicle. Improper connections can make it hard for your battery to supply the proper amperage to the alternator and the engine. It can also cause problems with your battery, including everything from overcharging to worn or grimed connections.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire brush
  • Heavy duty cleaner
  • Rag
  • Flathead screwdriver or standard wrench set
  • Use a rag to spread heavy duty cleaner over the battery connection ends and the posts on your battery. You want a clean connection for proper battery use and life. Use a wire brush, if necessary, to remove built up acid and grime.

  • Wipe the connection ends and the battery posts until they can be considered perfectly clean.

  • Gently slide the battery cable ends over the battery posts, being sure to first match positive (red) with positive and then match negative (black) with negative.

  • Use a flathead screwdriver or a standard open-end wrench (depending on what is required) to tighten the cinch bolt on each battery cable. Secure the bolts tightly, but not to the point that you stress the cable clamps.

  • Gently tug on the battery cables making sure they are secure and strong.
