How to Clean Rust on Chrome Rims

Rust is a common problem for car owners. The metal makes frequent contact with moisture or water and rust forms through oxidation. The rims of wheels are also subject to rust. You should remove rust on chrome rimes as soon as possible. Rust only spreads if left untreated, and it can cause major damage to the rims. Fortunately, it is easy to get rid of rust.

Things You'll Need

  • Hose
  • Rubber gloves
  • Scrubbing pad or steel wool pad
  • Rust remover
  • Rag or cloth
  • Chrome Polish
  • Clean off the rims with a hose to remove all dirt and grime.

  • Scrub away surface rust with a scrubbing pad or steel wool pad. Put on rubber gloves to protect your hands from the rust remover used for difficult rust. Put a little rust remover on to a steel wool pad and apply it to the rusted areas of the rim.

  • Wait five to ten minutes for the acids in the rust remover to dissolve the rust. Read the label for specific instructions.

  • Wipe away the rust and rust remover with a cloth or rag.

  • Apply chrome polish to the rims. This inhibits the formation of new rust.
