How to Clean an AEM DryFlow Filter

AEM DryFlow filters for vehicles use non-woven synthetic filter media rather than oiled filter media to keep dirt and debris out of an engine. As the filter media doesn't use oil, typically the bulk of any dirt and debris shakes off the filter material naturally while the vehicle is in use. Some buildup from small particulates trapped by the filter media can still occur, making regular cleaning necessary to help the filter work efficiently. Cleaning isn't difficult though and requires little beyond washing the material with a mild cleaner.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild, multipurpose spray cleaner
  • AEM DryFlow Filter Cleaning Solution
  • Spray bottle
  • Water
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Bucket
  • Mask
  • Gloves

Panel and Round Filters

  • Remove the filter from your vehicle.

  • Tap the filter gently against your hand or the ground to dislodge and shake off some of the dirt and debris.

  • Spray the filter media on both sides with a mild, multipurpose spray cleaner; or pour AEM DryFlow Filter Cleaner into a spray bottle and spray it onto the filter. Wait five minutes.

  • Rinse the filter thoroughly with water from a hose or tap. Run the water over one side of the filter to clear dirt and debris on the opposite side, turn the filter over and repeat.

  • Repeat the cleaner spray and rinsing process until you can no longer see any dirt and debris in the rinse water and the filter has a cleaner appearance. Once the water appears clear, continue rinsing another five minutes to remove any cleaner residues.

  • Shake the filter and set it aside to air dry.

  • Return the filter to the vehicle when dry.

Cone Filters

  • Remove the filter from the vehicle and tap it gently against your hand or on the ground.

  • Measure the length of the filter media with a measuring tape or ruler and then fill a bucket with warm water to the height of the measurement.

  • Pour 12 ounces of AEM Filter Cleaning solution into the bucket.

  • Place the filter---bottom end first---into the bucket and soak the filter for 10 minutes.

  • Wash the filter by grasping the top of the filter and turning it side to side---in the same way you might turn a dial or knob---so that the filter rotates in the water. Turn it for approximately 30 seconds to a minute and then dunk the filter up and down in the water.

  • Dispose of the dirty water, refill the bucket with water and cleaning solution and repeat this process---soaking, rotating and dunking the filter in the bucket to dislodge dirt and debris.

  • Rinse the filter thoroughly with water from a hose or tap until you can no longer see any suds from your cleaner or refill the bucket with clean water and rotate and dunk the filter until you can no longer see the suds.

  • Shake the filter slightly to remove excess water and then set it aside to air dry completely before returning it to your vehicle.
