If you need to charge a completely dead Altima car battery, you are better off using a battery charger than starting the car by jumping the battery with a working vehicle and then letting the battery charge off the alternator. This method can damage the alternator and cost hundreds of dollars to repair. Altima car batteries are deep cell batteries and should be completely charged with a battery charger to ensure proper operation.
Remove the battery from the vehicle by first removing the negative battery connector from the battery terminal and then by removing the positive battery connector from the battery terminal. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the bolts on the battery connectors and then pull upward to lift the connectors off the terminal.
Lift the battery out of the engine compartment and place on a level surface. Do not place the battery onto concrete.
Connect the car battery charger to the battery. Connect the positive batter charger connector to the positive battery terminal and then connect the negative charger cable to the negative battery terminal. The standard color of the positive cable is red and the standard color of the negative cable is black. However, the car battery you purchase could be different. Consult the charger guide to ensure the standard color code applies to your charger.
Charge the battery for twelve hours. Note: If the battery has a charge indicator, stop charging when the charger indicates the battery is charged.
Disconnect the battery from the charger by removing the negative cable and then the positive cable.
Place the battery back into the battery tray that is located in the engine compartment. Connect the battery cables, positive first and negative second. Secure both connectors with an adjustable wrench.
