Replacing a shift knob with a nice alloy aftermarket knob or simply replacing an worn knob with a new is a job that can be accomplished at home. When it comes to aftermarket shift knob,s there are many, many choices, from the inexpensive ones available at auto parts stores to more expensive ones available from high-end auto parts distributors.
Determine how your shift knob is installed. This will vary depending on the make and model of your car. Some knobs simply screw on to the threaded shaft of the shift lever (Porsches, etc), some simply pop on (BMWs) and others are held on with a set screw or bolt located at the bottom of the shift knob.
Turn the knob counterclockwise. If it is the type that pops off, simply pull up on it hard. If it is held on with a set screw, loosen the screw or bolt and slide it off the shift knob.
Clean the shift lever with a mild cleaner and a clean, dry rag. Slide the new shift knob onto the shift lever.
Turn the shift knob clockwise until it is tight and the logo or gearshift pattern are oriented correctly, if it is a screw-on type. Press it firmly onto the shift lever if it is press-on type.
If the knob uses set screws, tighten the set screw or screws against the shift lever. Make sure the knob is oriented correctly before tightening the set screws. Many aftermarket shift knobs install with set screws, even if the original shift knob was a screw-on or pop-on knob.
