How to Change a Honda Odyssey Car Battery

The battery of your Honda Odyssey needs maintenance just like any other part. Although there are "maintenance free" batteries, they still need to be kept charged properly. Check fluid levels monthly for those that require maintenance. If you don't do any of these and your battery goes out, you'll have to replace it so you can get the minivan back on the road again.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and deep-well socket set
  • Replacement battery
  • Pop the hood and locate the battery. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery using an open-end wrench. Once it's disconnected, repeat the process with the positive terminal.

  • Unbolt the battery tie-down strap from the battery tray using a 3/8-inch ratchet and deep-well socket and then lift the tie down strap off of the battery.

  • Lift the battery out of the engine compartment. Take it to your local automotive recycler or parts store for either a core credit or for recycling. Then put the replacement battery in its place, making sure that the terminals are in the same orientation as they were from the factory.

  • Connect the positive terminal to the battery using the open-end wrench, then do the same with the negative terminal. Start the minivan to make sure everything works correctly, then allow it to run for 10 to 15 minutes to help charge the battery.
