How to Check the Brake Fluid in a Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango relies on brake fluid to power the caliper pistons inside the brake calipers and force the brake pads against the rotors during braking. When brake pads become worn, the piston extends further to keep the pad surface in contact with the rotor. During the wear of the pads, brake fluid is sapped from the master cylinder reservoir. Daimler-Chrysler recommends that you check the brake fluid level when the brake pads are replaced and as part of troubleshooting poorly functioning brakes. If necessary, add fluid to the system to maintain a properly functioning braking system.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean towel
  • Brake fluid
  • Pull the hood release lever below the dashboard, on the driver's side of the Durango.

  • Lift the hood of the Dodge Durango and lift the hood support arm to hold the hood in the upright position.

  • Inspect the master cylinder container. The master cylinder container is on the driver's side of the Durango's engine compartment, near the windshield with a lid marked "BRAKE." The fluid inside the master cylinder container should be between the lines that read "Full" and "Need Fluid."

  • Clean the outside of the master cylinder with a damp towel before removing the cap.

  • Fill the master cylinder with fluid if the fluid level is below the acceptable range for brake fluid.
