How to Change the Front Brake Pads on a 2001 Accord

The 2001 Honda Accord employs an anti-lock braking system that relies on the proper functioning of the rotors, the calipers, and the brake pads. If any of the components of the braking system fail to function properly, the entire system is at risk of failure. Honda recommends regular maintenance of the brake system components including the replacement of worn brake pads. While many trust the replacement of their brake pads to professional auto mechanics, you can safely and properly replace your brake pads yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • 13 mm wrench
  • Lug wrench
  • C-clamp
  • Brake pads
  • Brake grease
  • Apply the parking brake of the Honda Accord. Lift the Honda by placing the jack beneath the frame and the fun of the vehicle.

  • Support the vehicle on jack stands.

  • Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench and pull the wheels from the wheel bolts.

  • Remove the two caliper slide bolts on each caliper with the 13 mm wrench.

  • Pull the caliper from the caliper bridge and the rotor. Slide the brake pads from the sides of the caliper. Use a flat screwdriver to pry the metal clips from the back of the brake pads if they are stuck to the sides of the caliper.

  • Place the C-clamp onto the caliper piston on the back of the side of the caliper from which caliper piston extends. Twist the C-clamp to squeeze the caliper piston into the side of the caliper.

  • Apply brake grease to the area of the caliper where the piston emerges from the side. Apply brake grease to the back panels the new brake pads.

  • Slide the new brake pads onto the sides of the caliper. Place the caliper onto the caliper bridge and screw in the caliper slide bolts with the 13 mm wrench.

  • Return the wheels and lug nuts to the wheel bolts.

  • Remove the jack stands and lower the Accord to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts on the Honda with the lug wrench.
