How to Add Transmission Fluid to a 93 Mazda MX-3

The 1993 Mazda MX-3 is a reliable and fun-to-drive economy car. Thankfully, simple maintenance such as adding transmission fluid can be done at home without making a trip to the dealer. Most newer vehicles do not come with transmission dipsticks, making do-it-yourself fluid additions impossible.

Things You'll Need

  • DEXRON-II or M-III automatic transmission fluid
  • Funnel
  • Cloth
  • Make sure your MX-3 is parked on level ground. Parking at even a slight angle can distort your reading of the fluid level.

  • Start the vehicle and let it run for 10 minutes. With the engine running, locate the transmission fluid dipstick, which is found behind the air-intake hose on the driver's side of the engine bay.

  • Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean. Re-insert the dipstick completely and quickly pull it out to check the fluid level. The fluid level should be at the "F" mark (for "Full"). If it is not, you will need to add transmission fluid.

  • Place the funnel into the dipstick tube. Add transmission fluid a little bit at a time. Check the level after each addition; be careful not to overfill the reservoir. Add only enough fluid to bring the level to the full mark.
