How to Know if Your Sun Roof Motor Is Dead

A sun roof is a great way to let in the light during a sunny day. However, you may find occasionally the roof doesn't open properly. This can be due to the sun roof motor dieing out. To check to see if the sun roof motor is dead or not there are a few different areas of the car you need to inspect. The entire inspection process should only take a few minutes of your time.

Things You'll Need

  • User manual
  • Power on your vehicle. You need the car running to test the sun roof motor.

  • Press the "Open" button on the ceiling of your car to open the sun roof. If the sun roof doesn't open that is the first sign your motor is dead, especially if you don't hear any noise coming from the sun roof. If you hear a slight "wherrring" noise it can be due to a gear falling off of the actual motor.

  • Look in the user manual of your vehicle and turn to the page that covers the fuses. Find what fuse controls the sun roof.

  • Open the fuse box on your car (either located near the steering wheel or under the hood of the car). Remove the fuse that controls the sun roof and inspect it. If the middle of the fuse is blown out you need to replace the fuse. If not the fuse is find and the problem rests in the motor of your car.

  • Take your vehicle into your car dealership and they can typically replace the sun roof motor in only a matter of minutes. It also shouldn't cost too much because the sun roof motor isn't expensive and the labor cost is low due to only one individual needing to work on your car for a short period of time.
