How to Program a GM Keyless Entry in a Lumina

The Chevy Lumina model-years range from 1990 through 2001. The programming instructions for keyless entry, remote controls starting in 1994 model-years differ slightly from the instructions starting in model-year 1997. You need to program the car computer to recognize the signals from the remotes. Note that when you enter programming mode, the computer forgets all prior authorizations and no remotes work until you program them while in programming mode.

Things You'll Need

  • Electrical tape

  • Ground the terminal to a nearby bolt or the trunk latch. The car computer will lock and unlock the power locks to indicate that the terminal has been successfully grounded. Leave it grounded during the course of the programming session. Use electrical tape to hold it in place, if need be.

  • Press any button on the keyless remote you want to be recognized by the car. The car will cycle the locks again to confirm successful programming.

  • Remove the terminal from grounding in order to exit the programming mode.
