How to Replace a Nissan Quest Micro Air Filter

Some Nissan Quest models are equipped with an in-cabin micro air filter. This filter is more commonly known as a cabin air filter, although it's also called a passenger compartment filter and an air conditioning filter. The procedure to replace the filter in your first or second-generation (1993 to 2002) Quest van is a bit more involved than in some other vehicles, but the procedure can be completed in about 30 minutes. When purchasing a replacement filter, be sure to specify whether your Quest has the 3.0L or 3.3L engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement filter
  • Turn the engine off, open the hood, and disconnect the negative battery cable (--) with the pliers. Close the hood.

  • Pull the windshield wiper arms forward into the service position, perpendicular with the windshield. Locate the metal clip in front of the wiper nut base (where it attaches to the Quest); pull this clip straight up, then pull the wiper arm backward to remove it. Repeat the process with the other windshield wiper arm.

  • Remove the six Phillips screws from the cowl cover (the panel the wiper arms are attached to). Open and support the hood. Remove the four Phillips screws from the bottom portion of the cowl cover.

  • Locate the windshield wiper hose connected to the passenger side of the cowl cover. Pull the hose away from the cowl cover to disconnect it. Lift the cowl cover straight up to remove it from the engine compartment. Set it to the side. Behind the cowl cover, on the passenger side, you'll find the micro air filter cover.

  • Remove the four Phillips screws from the micro air filter cover. Pull the cover straight back to remove it. The filter is now visible. Slide the filter out with your hand.

  • Insert the replacement filter. Push it into the compartment fully, until the three lower tabs on the compartment are visible beneath the filter. Replace the filter cover; tighten the four Phillips screws.

  • Replace the cowl cover. Tighten the four lower screws and reconnect the windshield washer hose. Close the hood. Tighten the six upper screws along the top portion of the cowl cover.

  • Reattach the windshield wiper arms. Attach the arm's base to the mounting nut; push it down firmly until the metal clip snaps back in place, securing the wiper arm. Open the hood and reconnect the negative battery cable.
