How to Change the Air Filter in a Mazda 626

The Mazda 626 was available in multiple engine configurations, including a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder and a 2.5-liter V6. The engine air filter in both setups in located in the same place, and the process for changing it is the same. Mazda recommends replacing your 626's engine air filter at least once every 24 months or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first. More frequent replacement is recommended for dusty climates (check annually). You can purchase a replacement air filter for your 626 at any Mazda dealership or auto parts store.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement filter
  • Shut the engine off. Let it cool down for 15 to 20 minutes. Open and prop the hood.

  • Find the air filter compartment. It's mounted in the right-center part of the engine compartment, to the left of the battery. The filter is in the same place on the 2.0-liter engine and the 2.5-liter engine.

  • Push down the four clamps with your hand. This will detach the filter cover from the compartment. Push the filter cover to the right to remove it; there is a latch pin on the left side that needs to unhook.

  • Life the old filter from the compartment and discard it. Insert the replacement filter with the filter's rim facing upward. Push the filter compartment cover back to the left; watch the cover's pin; make sure it inserts fully into the hole on the left side of the compartment. Push up the clamps to secure the cover to the compartment.
