How to Test a Keyless Remote

Your car's computer gets programmed to recognize the signals emitted by your keyless-entry remote controls. After a programming, you may want to test the remotes to ensure the programming was complete. If it wasn't complete, it will have to be redone. So keep your receipt if you had someone else do the programming.

  • Unlock your car doors manually or with the control panel in the driver's door.

  • Press the lock button on your first remote, standing outside of the car.

  • Check that the locks are locked by trying to open them manually.

  • Press the unlock button on the same remote.

  • Check that the locks are now unlocked by opening them manually.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for each remote. One remote's being successfully programmed into the computer doesn't mean they all were.
