How to Change a Cabin Filter in a 2003 Impala

Some, but not all, 2000 to 2005 Chevrolet Impala models came with a cabin air filter, although the feature became standard when the Impala was redesigned in 2006. If your 2003 Impala has a cabin filter, it is mounted within the engine bay below the windshield. This filter improves the quality of air in your interior, filtering out dust and other particles. When the cabin air filter becomes clogged, your air conditioner may not perform well. In addition, you may notice a mild odor inside the Impala. Replace your cabin air filter every 15,000 miles, according to the owner's manual.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Replacement cabin air filter
  • Turn on the windshield wiper switch (with the ignition on), then turn the ignition off and remove the key when the wipers are in the up position. Open the hood.

  • Pull off the weatherstripping on the passenger-side cowl cover (the same panel on which the wiper arms are mounted). Pull the windshield wiper hose away from the three clips. It's not necessary to disconnect the hose--simply position it away.

  • Unscrew the fasteners from the passenger-side cowl cover. Lift the cowl cover up to expose the cabin air filter. Pull the old filter straight out.

  • Insert the new cabin air filter; push it all the way back. Reattach the passenger-side cowl cover; tighten the fasteners. Reattach the windshield wiper hose to the clips on the cowl.

  • Reattach the weatherstripping beneath the panel. Push it down firmly to secure it.
