How to Replace the Taillight Assembly on a Santa Fe

If you have a crack or break in the taillight cover on your Hyundai Santa Fe, you should replace it. Cracks and holes in the taillight assembly can allow water to get into the light assembly, shorting out the lights and causing electrical damage. You can purchase a new taillight assembly from an auto parts retailer or Hyundai dealership. Replacing the cover is a quick job that you can complete in minutes in your own driveway.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Open the rear lift gate of your Hyundai Santa Fe. Locate the two retaining screws on the rear cover of the taillight assembly. Remove the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Pull gently outward on the light assembly to pull it free of the rear of the car. It may take a little bit of effort since a tight-fitting molded ring helps secure it to the body. Pull straight out to remove it. If you twist the assembly, you risk breaking the retaining ring.

  • Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the bulb sockets in the tail light assembly. Remove the entire taillight assembly from your Santa Fe.

  • Connect the wiring harnesses to the bulb sockets on the new taillight assembly. Insert the new assembly into the Santa Fe body and press it firmly into the molded ring. You will feel the assembly click when it is securely in place.

  • Replace the two retaining screws on the light assembly. Repeat the process on the other side if necessary. Test the taillights to confirm that they are working as intended.
