How to Install the Pulley on a Power Steering Pump

Without the power steering pulley properly installed on the engine of your vehicle, the power steering pump will not function correctly. Your local auto parts store will have the power steering pulley for your specific year and model vehicle. The power steering pulley will come with the hardware needed for installation when you purchase it. You will need a pair of pliers to keep the pulley from moving while you are tightening the securing nut and a ratchet set to tighten the securing nut in the middle of the pulley.

Things You'll Need

  • Pliers
  • New power steering pulley
  • Ratchet set
  • Open the power steering pulley's box and get the bolt and nut out of the box. Look inside the ratchet set and find the correct size socket for the securing bolt.

  • Slide the washer onto the securing bolt and insert the securing bolt into the hole in the middle of the power steering pulley. Slide the other washer onto the securing bolt.

  • Insert the bolt on the power steering into the hole on the engine for the power steering pulley. Push the pulley's securing bolt into the hole as far as the bolt will go.

  • Grab the nut on the back of the power steering pulley with the pliers to keep the pulley from turning while you tighten the bolt.

  • Tighten the securing bolt using the ratchet set. Screw the bolt into the engine using the ratchet set until the firmly tight.
