How to Jump a Car Battery on a Miata

Jump starting a Mazda Miata can be a bit confusing. On most model years Mazda saw fit to use a Gel-cell battery in the trunk of the car as a power source. The battery is located on the right side of the trunk and has battery cables running to the front of the car through the passenger compartment. There are charging posts in the engine compartment designed to be used for charging the battery or jump starting the engine if needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Jumper cables or jump starter pack
  • Locate the charging terminals in the engine compartment of your Miata. They are on the drivers side of the engine and are marked with red for positive and black for the negative post.

  • Connect the cables from your source, whether another car or a jump starter pack, to the terminals on your Miata. Make sure the red cable goes to the red terminal and the black cable goes to the black terminal.

  • Start your car as you normally would and leave it running. Carefully remove the cables from the car, making sure to stay clear of the fan and other moving parts. Remove the cables from the other car if you used one. If you used a jump pack, store the cables on the spot provided on the side of the pack.

  • Drive the car for 20 to 30 minutes to recharge the battery. If the battery does not charge, it may be time for a new one and you should have it tested.
