How to Tell If the Car Battery Is Going Out

On average, good car batteries last about three to four years. Knowing the condition and life of your battery is crucial for several reasons. The battery functions as an essential power source for your vehicle. Being able to recognize signs of a failing battery will allow you to buy another one before the battery completely dies. Also, you avoid debacles such as being stranded on the side of the road.

  • Note any difficulty in starting your car. Many times, when the battery is going out the car will not start right up. The car may begin to make a clicking noise when you turn the key. Sometimes the battery will no longer hold a charge.

  • Check the battery light on the dashboard to see if it is on. The battery light usually appears as soon as there is any problem with the battery. If the light is on, take your car to a mechanic to see if you need a replacement because the battery light does not always denote the need for a replacement.

  • Be aware of any leaks on the battery and any unnecessary buildup.

  • Know the life of your battery before you buy it. Try to replace the battery about a month or two prior to its life expectancy to avoid any problems.

  • Ensure that your vehicle is not sitting for long periods of time without being started. When a battery is not used and a car remains dormant, the likelihood of the battery failing increases.

  • Notice any damage to the battery after an accident or extreme weather conditions. Your car may not start as easily or not start at all.
