How to Break In a Honda Civic Engine

Honda is known for manufacturing high-quality vehicles, but even Honda engines need to be properly broken-in before normal operation. New engine components must be properly lubricated and worn-in first. Not following break-in procedures can increase engine wear and decrease efficiency.

  • Accelerate slowly when driving. Avoid high engine RPM as much as possible. The internal engine components are very fragile when new. Don't race or over-rev your engine.

  • Avoid steady speeds during engine break-in. If you are driving at highway speeds, change your speed once every 10 to 15 miles. Staying at a steady speed forces engine oil into one spot, limiting engine lubrication.

  • Don't brake aggressively. Extreme braking puts strain on a new engine by causing it to stop and start at irregular intervals.

  • Avoid heavy loads during the break-in period. Honda Civics are not recommended for towing under any circumstances, especially not during the engine break-in period. Don't overload your vehicle with heavy cargo; the extra weight will put more strain on your engine during the first few hundred miles.
