How to Shut Off an Automobile Check Engine Light

The "Check Engine" light on your car's dashboard can be turned off manually using an inexpensive electronic reader purchased at most auto parts stores. The process is quick and simple, allowing you to identify codes which represent specific connections in the car which have been flagged as problematic. While using the device will turn the warning light off, it is likely to come back on again if the specific systems are not fixed.

Things You'll Need

  • Code-reader
  • Diagnostic connector in your car's dashboard
  • Purchase a code-reader at any auto parts store which supplies car accessories and maintenance tools. This small machine is inexpensive and will read the codes inside your cars' circuit board to determine where the problem has occurred. Code readers will work on all vehicles made in 1996 or later.

  • Plug the code readers' cable into the diagnostic connector of your car. You can usually find this on the left-bottom side of your dashboard. If you can't find it, check in your car manual for its location or ask a car service person for help.

  • Once the code reader is plugged in, the device will be on. Push "READ." The unit will display the codes which identify a circuit in the electronic engine management system which has malfunctioned.

  • It is a good idea to write down the codes you see on the screen for future reference. You will be deleting them shortly (which will turn off the check engine light).

  • Press the "ERASE" button to delete the codes.

  • Turn on your car. Your check engine light will be off. However, because the circuits were recognized as faulty before, they will probably trigger the check engine light once again if the problem is not remedied.
