Chevrolet 2.2 Engine Maintenance

General Motors has produced numerous engines through its various brands, including Chevrolet, the automaker's most popular brand by far. Several 2.2 liter engines have been developed over the years, including most recently an I5 motor for its trucks and an I4 engine introduced as the "Iron Duke" during the late 1970s for its small car line. This article covers maintenance of the 2.2 I4 engine specifically, including its more modern variations.

Standard Maintenance

  • The simplest maintenance for your 2.2 liter I4 engine is to ensure that the oil level is full and that it is clean. Change intervals vary, so check your car's maintenance manual for guidance. Replace oil with the recommended grade, and change the oil filter. Check engine oil levels every other fill up; replenish as needed.

On a seasonal basis, check the rubber belts that loop around various pulleys on the front of your engine. These belts help provide power for other components, including the air-conditioner compressor and alternator. Your vehicle's timing belt controls the timing of the engine's valves; if installed on a vehicle such as a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, the timing belt could damage the 2.2 liter I4 engine if it were to break. Replace a worn or loose-fitting timing belt at once.

You can also help keep your Chevy engine from overheating by making sure that the radiator cooling system is working fine. When the engine is cold, remove the radiator cap and inspect the radiator. Replace the cap if the rubber gasket is worn or missing. Inspect the coolant level and appearance; if it looks rusty, then clean the system and replace the fluid with an even mixture of water and antifreeze. Check all radiator hoses and clamps; replace worn parts as needed.

Inspect the exterior of the engine. Excess amounts of oil and dirt will conceal leaks and even insulate the engine, causing it to run too hot.

Major Maintenance

  • You may want to extend the life of your Chevy engine by performing major maintenance, such as an engine overhaul. By removing the 2.2 liter I4 engine from your car or truck, you can replace or rebuild worn components, including valves, pistons, connecting rods and head gasket.
