How to Fix a Squeaky Automatic Car Window

Automotive power windows can wear out and make noises, such as squeaking and squealing, that can become annoying. The window regulator, used in most vehicles, is a series of joints and metal bars which can rust or corrode and cause harsh squealing. Another possible cause is the power motor, which has small bearings that can make noise. The average backyard mechanic can fix a squeaky window in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Can of spray Lithium grease
  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Extra door panel rivets
  • Remove the door panel by prying out the power window assembly, then disconnecting it from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug from the rear of the module. Turn the arm rest bolts counterclockwise. There may be small screws on the inside of the interior door handle which will also require removal. Once these bolts and screws are out, pull firmly on the door panel to disengage it from the pop rivets that hold it to the metal. These plastic rivets can become brittle with age, and may break easily. Remove the panel and set it aside, away from the work area.

  • Locate the window regulator joints and tracks and spray them with an ample amount of white Lithium grease. This grease sticks to surfaces and will seep it's way into the joint bushings. If any grease gets on the glass, wipe it away with a dry towel. The power motor itself has gears that turn the window regulator, but these are internally greased bearings. If they are the culprit of the noise, the entire motor will have to be replaced.

  • Disconnect the motor by pulling the adapter plug apart, then turning the mount screws counterclockwise. Pull the motor out and replace it with a new unit by pressing it into position and connecting the adapter plugs.

  • Replace the door panel by pressing it onto the metal and tapping on the individual pop rivets to engage them into the mount holes. Turn the arm rest bolts and door handle screws clockwise. Reconnect the power window switches and press the switch assembly into the door panel opening.
