How to Clean a Honda Injector

Most modern cars use fuel-injection systems to deliver fuel to the combustion chamber. If you drive a Honda and you experience engine sputtering from acceleration, weak acceleration, hesitation or general loss of power, your problem could be the result of dirty or clogged fuel injectors. Fuel injectors are largely self-cleaning, but gradual build up over time can lead to dirt clogging the injectors. Using a fuel injector cleaner will clear away these clogs, breathing new life into your automobile.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel injector cleaner
  • Use speed to blow debris from the Honda's injectors. If you experience a lagging feel when you accelerate, try "exercising" your car's engine. Take your Honda to an open stretch of freeway. Give it a quick run up to 60 and maintain cruising speed for a few minutes. Rev the engine past 3,000 rpm as you accelerate. This should be easy enough if your Honda has a manual transmission. If you have an automatic, turn off the overdrive and floor the gas pedal. Exercising your engine will let fuel run through its system more quickly, therefore expelling any buildup of dirt or fuel in the injectors.

  • Use fuel additives that contain injector cleaners, such as Sea Foam, Pyroil Super Concentrate and Techron Concentrate. Wait until your car is nearly out of gas. Pour the entire bottle of injector cleaner into the empty tank, then fill it with gas. Repeat this process every 3,000 miles.

  • Use fuel additives during each fill up to keep your injectors well maintained. The fuel additive contains cleaning materials that will help dissolve deposits that clog your fuel injectors. They also provide the added benefit of cleaning carbon deposits from your engine's intake valves.
