How to Remove a Ford Pickup Tailgate

Removing the tailgate on a Ford pickup can be done relatively quickly. If you want to replace it, install a net, or just need some extra cargo space, almost anyone can remove the tailgate.

How to Remove a Ford Pickup Tailgate

  • Open the tailgate on the Ford pickup, and hold it at a a 45-degree angle against your torso.

  • Move toward one side of the tailgate, and locate and access the cable or hinge (either one may be present on a Ford pickup, depending on the year and model).

  • Remove the cable or hinge from the retainer. Some cable or hinge ends have locking clips. If this is the case, press inward on the clip and slip the locking clip over the head of the retainer.

  • Move to the other side of the tailgate, and remove the cable or hinge from that side in the same fashion.

  • Gently let down the tailgate until the right, or passenger, side aligns with the tailgate tab. Pull upward and out to the right. Be careful as the left, or driver's, side simply pops into the lower tailgate hinge. The tailgate will come right out.
