How to Service a Carburetor

Carburetors control the amount of fuel that is mixed with air in an engine. Like most parts of a engine, the carburetor needs to be serviced regularly. Compared to some maintenance, this service can be easy.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Gumout Spray
  • Rag

General Tuneup

  • Start the engine of the car.

  • Open the throttle on the carburetor. The throttle plate is the circular object that is on the opposite side of the fuel line.

  • Use the speed adjustment needle for high speed to the highest speed.

  • Set the throttle at the lowest speed.

  • Adjust the idle mixture screw with a screwdriver until the engine is running smoothly. As you're facing the throttle plate, the idle mixture screw will be on the side to the right of the throttle plate.

Replacing a Carburetor

  • Locate the nuts that hold the old carburetor in place.

  • Unscrew the nuts.

  • Remove the old carburetor.

  • Remove the choke hot air tube and ferrule. The hot air tube is the long tube that attaches to the back of the carburetor. The ferrule is the box attached to the hot air tube.

  • Place the new carburetor where the old carburetor was.

  • Align the holes on the sides with the holes near where your old carburetor was on your engine.

  • Screw the new nuts into the holes on the new carburetor, tightening them as much as possible.

  • Attach the new choke hot air tube and ferrule. You might need to bend it in order for it to fit.
