How to Replace a Tie Rod in a Chrysler Town & Country

When the steering of your Chrysler Town & Country doesn't feel quite right, that could be a sign that you need to replace the tie rods. You'll find that after you do this, and get your minivan aligned, all will be right again.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug nut wrench
  • Jack and jack stands
  • Wrench
  • Paint of marker
  • Pen and paper
  • Tie rods
  • Torque wrench
  • Make sure you get tie rods that are specific to your Chrysler Town and Country.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on the front tires, and jack up the vehicle. When you have your minivan securely supported on jack stands, remove the tires.

  • Take out the bolt that secures the tie rod to the steering gear. With paint or a marker, mark the position of the tie rod in the adjuster, then remove the bolt that secures it.

  • Unscrew the tie rod, making sure you record the number of turns it takes.

  • Transfer the mark on the old tie rod onto the new one. This will help you put the new tie rod in the right position. Screw the tie rod into the adjuster, making sure you do it with the same number of turns as it took to remove the old one.

  • Put in the bolt to secure the tie rod to the adjuster, and tighten it to 55 foot pounds. Put the other end of the tie rod into the steering gear, and tighten the bolt to 65 foot pounds.

  • Repeat the steps for the other tie rod, then put back on the tires. Tighten the lug nuts to 95 foot pounds. Get the Chrysler Town & Country aligned.
