How to Replace PDC Relays in a Jeep Grand Cherokee

The electrical Power Distribution Center (PDC), as its name suggests, is the under-the-hood electrical box for the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ Series. Models manufactured between 1999 and 2004 house this box in the engine compartment close to the battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Manual
  • PDC relay replacement
  • Magnifying glass (optional)
  • Soldering tools (optional)
  • Disconnect the battery before working on your Jeep Grand Cherokee to protect yourself and your vehicle from power surges and damage.

  • Remove the PDC box cover by unlatching it from the housing.

  • Locate the PDC relay(s) you need to replace by checking your Jeep Grand Cherokee manufacturer's manual in the "Electrical Systems" chapter or on the PDC lid diagram.

  • Keep in mind that the Power Distribution Center under the hood doesn't contain all of your vehicle's relays. PDC relays include the auto shutdown relay, engine starter motor relay, wiper relays, glow relays, back-up lamp relay, viscous/cabin heater relay and horn relay. Additional relays (fog lamp, low and high beams, rear window defogger) are housed under the dash to the left of the steering column.

  • Unplug your Jeep Grand Cherokee PDC relay by gently pulling on the cartridge or plug-style relay block.

  • Check the relay sockets (also called cavities or connectors), cavity pins and PDC housing for damage, dirt or corrosion and clean or repair, if needed.

  • Plug your new relay into the empty PDC cavity, reconnect the battery and see if the relay corrected your electrical system issue.
