How to Inspect the Exhaust System on a Ford Taurus

To keep your Ford Taurus operating at maximum efficiency, inspect the entire exhaust system twice a year. Be aware of clicking, rattling or sputtering while it idles, which could mean you have a problem with one of the sections of the exhaust system. Also, if you smell fumes in your Taurus, you should check the exhaust.

Things You'll Need

  • Hoist or hydraulic lift
  • Flashlight
  • Hammer
  • Raise the hood and locate the three tubular pipes of the exhaust manifold bolted to the cylinder head on the driver's side of the engine. Check that the bolts are secure and the gaskets aren't worn. Look for moisture buildup or cracks on the manifold.

  • Lift the car on a hoist or hydraulic lift to safely get under the car to inspect the entire exhaust system.

  • Shine a flashlight up under the car to inspect the head pipe that connects to the manifold underneath the engine. Continue shining the light on the rest of the exhaust system, including the catalytic converter, muffler and tailpipe.

  • Run your hand over the entire exhaust system to feel for holes, cracks, rust or loose connections, especially if you heard telltale noises. Tap gently with a hammer along each piece to locate any weak sections.

  • Check the hangers and clamps to make sure they are securely in place and not rattling around.

  • Lower the car after you've completely inspected the Ford Taurus exhaust system.
