In 1902, engineer Henry Leland persuaded William Murphy and Lemuel Bowen to keep a manufacturing plant -- formerly occupied by the defunct Henry Ford Company -- instead of liquidating it and a new auto manufacturer was born. He named the new company the Cadillac Automobile Company after the French explorer Antoine de Cadillac -- appropriate since de Cadillac founded Detroit in 1701.
"Trac Off" means the traction control system in your 1996 Cadillac is turned off. A switch -- usually in the glove box -- turns the system on or off. The message may also mean there is a problem in the traction control system, such as with the anti-lock brake system, which has disabled the TCS. The "Check Engine" light or the "ABS" may be illuminated in conjunction with the "Trac Off" message. Have your Cadillac scanned for diagnostic trouble codes as a first step on troubleshooting the traction control problem.
