96 Chevy Caprice Fuel Filter Location

The fuel filter on my 1996 Chevrolet Caprice is an inline filter on the driver's side of the chassis, in front of the rear wheel. When it needed to be replaced, I decided to try doing it myself. A memory-saver device kept the electronic systems from losing memory when I disconnected the battery, and I got a fuel gauge to relieve fuel pressure. I sprayed myself with gas the first time I tried opening the fuel pressure valve, but I solved that problem by wrapping a rag around the fitting. After I changed my shirt, I jacked the car up, using the differential as the jacking point and putting the jack stands under the frame in front of the rear wheels.

Changing the Fuel Filter

  • I removed the filter bracket bolt and then went about trying to figuring out how to disconnect the filter. After blowing the dirt off the fittings, I discovered that twisting the fitting about 1/4 inch in each direction and then squeezing the plastic tabs would let me pull the fitting apart. I disconnected the body harness clips and the filter came off. On reassembly, I tightened the filter bracket bolt to 89 inch-pounds. After I dropped the Caprice to the ground, I pressurized the system by turning the ignition switch on for two seconds and then off for 10 seconds. I turned the switch back on again and checked for leaks before I started the car.
